    School Outdoor Education

Maungaroa Station is an ideal venue for Outdoor Education. It offers a variety of experiences that are something new for most students. We work with individual teachers to provide a programme that fits the particular needs of their students.

Isolation makes our camping experience a relaxed and easy care activity. It is safe and there is plenty of space for larger groups to utilise. The river runs just outside the gate and this provides a safe swimming area.

    Farming

We have lived here for the past thirty years and love the life, running beef breeding cows and some sheep. We farm about two thousand of the twenty seven thousand acres that make up the Station.

Grazing Horses Penned Cattle Cattle on River Flats Stock Yards

Established circa 1900 as one of six big "Shipping Company Runs" situated around the East Coast, Maungaroa ran thirty thousand sheep in its heyday. The wool was taken down the river along the old "Coach Road", parts of which still exist today. In 1935, Maungaroa Station was wound up and the staff, as their final job, drove all the sheep, cattle and horses the sixty miles to Opotiki in one gigantic mixed up mob.

The owners took over running Maungaroa but with the low fertility of the soil and without the financial strength of the Shipping Companies, the Station gradually reverted to blackberry and manuka. Since we have had the lease we have worked hard to claw back the farmland and now run four hundred beef breeding cows and some sheep.
